The conference drew\u00a0114 environmental educators from across the state to a day and a half of sessions on environmental education, field trips, music of the mountains, campfires and more at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gsmit.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.nimbios.org\/personnel\/staff\" target=\"_blank\">Kelly Sturner<\/a>, NIMBioS Education &amp; Outreach Coordinator, presented the biodiversity NIMBioS module which was published in NCTM&#8217;s Mathematics Teacher magazine. Since time to go outside was limited, teachers used Backyard Bug Counters (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Learning-Resources-Bug-Counters-Set\/dp\/B000296LPC\" target=\"_blank\">available from Learning Resources<\/a>) to tally up totals of insects found in mock plots and calculate Simpson&#8217;s Index of Biodiversity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NIMBioS showcased its &#8220;Measuring Biodiversity with Probability&#8221; at the Tennessee Environmental Educators Association Conference last week in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
