The workshop was\u00a0part of a longer Tennessee Department of Education &#8220;Math Counts II&#8221; Workshop.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2792\" style=\"width: 387px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.nimbios.org\/wordpress\/2016\/06\/23\/nimbios-teaches-the-teachers\/img_4868\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2792\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2792\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-2792\" src=\"https:\/\/legacy.nimbios.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/IMG_4868-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"In this lesson, teachers designing animal shelter cage arrangements.\" width=\"377\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/legacy.nimbios.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/IMG_4868-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/legacy.nimbios.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/IMG_4868-768x487.jpg 768w, https:\/\/legacy.nimbios.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/IMG_4868-1024x649.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 377px) 100vw, 377px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2792\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In this lesson, teachers use array-thinking to design the placement of cages in animal shelters.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The NIMBioS team\u00a0organized and presented interactive applications of math for grades 3-8, covering modeling, measurement and applications of geometry and array-thinking. Grades 3-5 teachers designed how cages might be arranged in different arrays in an animal shelter to minimize the spread of canine distemper virus. Grades 6-8 teachers learned how Alexander&#8217;s Formula is used to model how fast dinosaurs could move based on their stride length, determined from fossilized footprints, and based on their hip height, determined from fossilized bones. The teachers then took on the role of pretending to be bipedal dinosaurs and performed trials by running outside and measuring hip heights. They compared their data to what Alexander&#8217;s formula would predict.<\/p>\n<p>In early June, Lenhart and Sturner traveled to Campbell County High School in Jacksboro, TN, for two days as a part of a longer\u00a0workshop for high school math teachers called &#8220;Connecting Math and STEM Through Modeling.&#8221; Seventeen math teachers from Campbell County and surrounding counties participated in exercises designed to improve teachers&#8217;\u00a0understanding of math modeling in the real world. Using resources from <a href=\"https:\/\/m3challenge.siam.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Moody&#8217;s Mega Math Challenge<\/a>, Lenhart and Sturner presented the steps involved in\u00a0using real-world data to generate\u00a0a modeling equation. Teachers worked in groups and then presented their own model solutions and shared how they might do simple modeling cases with their students.<\/p>\n<p>The workshops were supported by two different grants to Lynn Hodge, associate professor of math education at UT-Knoxville, and Gale Stanley, a retired Campbell County science teacher and currently president of the Tennessee Science Teacher&#8217;s Association.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tennessee math teachers went back to the classroom\u00a0this month\u00a0to learn creative and engaging ways to connect mathematics with biology, led by the NIMBioS Education and\u00a0Outreach team.
