Not pictured: Gary An.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.nimbios.org\/workinggroups\/WG_ABMs\" target=\"_blank\">NIMBioS Working Group Optimal Control for Agent-based Models<\/a> has been busy blazing a trail: its perspective paper \u00a0on agent-based models in biology published last fall in the Bulletin of Mathematical Biology has been downloaded 500 times.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11538-016-0225-6\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Optimization and Control of Agent-Based Models in Biology: A Perspective&#8221;<\/a> proposes a new approach to optimization and control and outlines steps and specific techniques.<\/p>\n<p>The Working Group, which met four times from 2011 to 2014, was co-organized by Gary An, University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine; Reinhard Laubenbacher, Virginia Bioinformatics Institute; and Suzanne Lenhart and Jie Xiong, both from the Department of Mathematics, University of Tennessee.\u00a0The group submitted a proposal to form a Working Group following \u00a0a workshop at NIMBioS in December 2009.<\/p>\n<p>NIMBioS Working Groups are chosen to focus on major scientific questions at the interface between biology and mathematics. The groups comprise up to 10 participants, focus on a well-defined topic, and have well-defined goals and metrics of success. Working Groups typically\u00a0meet up to three\u00a0times over a two-year period.<\/p>\n<p>The next deadline to request support for a Working Group is March 1.
