Fifty middle school girls dug deep into science-technology-engineering-and-math at NIMBioS on Saturday with the Expanding Your Horizons Network<\/a>\u00a0STEM Activity Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was organized by Suzanne Lenhart and Greg Wiggins at NIMBioS, in consultation with\u00a0Judith Iriate-Gross<\/a> from Middle Tennessee State University. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Women faculty and staff from the University of Tennessee led hands-on activities, from “Squishing Specimens for Science” to “Powering VOLt City.” They were Virginia Dale<\/a>\u00a0from Oak Ridge National Laboratory,\u00a0Jessica Budke<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Liz Derryberry<\/a>\u00a0from Ecology and Evolutionary Biology,\u00a0Anne Skutnik<\/a>\u00a0from Electrical Engineering and Computer Science,\u00a0Audra Hinson<\/a>\u00a0from Microbiology, and\u00a0Lenhart<\/a>,\u00a0Joan Lind<\/a>, and\u00a0Marie Jameson<\/a>\u00a0from Mathematics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Expanding Your Horizons Network promotes the continuing development in mathematics and science of all people, with particular emphasis on the needs of women and girls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The day was co-sponsored by the\u00a0Knoxville Branch of the\u00a0American Association of University Women (AAUW)<\/a>.
