Summary. Bacterial biofilms are microbial layers that form on immersed interfaces where environmental conditions sustain microbial growth. They consist of bacteria that are embedded in and protected by a self-produced layer of extracellular polymeric substances. Biofilms can be considered as spatially structured microbial populations and as complex fluids. Both points of view will be represented in this mini-symposium that focuses on deterministic continuum descriptions of biofilm processes in models. Topics covered will range from biofilm quorum sensing response to fluid flow, to molecular aspects of genetic regulators.
