The NIMBioS classroom is packed this morning as the REU/REV participants learn MATLAB in preparation for their summer research projects. Postdoc Xavier Thibert-Plante is today’s instructor. The program is “a high-level technical computing language and interactive environment for algorithm development, data visualization, data analysis, and numeric computation,” which is fancy for a fast-action, all-around problem solver. The six research projects for this year’s REU/REV program are as follows:
- Tracking of fast movements inside cells
- Mathematical modeling of early dynamics of simian immunodeficiency virus
- The relationship between effort a mother bird expends on offspring and mate attractiveness
- Antifungal effects of essential oils on a biocontrol fungus
- Modeling the Feral Cat Population in Knox County, TN
- Dynamics of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli in cattle
