As with research and educational enterprises everywhere, those of us working at the interface of the quantitative and life sciences have been challenged by the lack of in-person connections and the limitations of the typical at-distance tools available for meetings. We at NIMBioS have decided to use this as an opportunity to offer some alternative tools to assist our community. As was evident from the interactions at the recent Society for Mathematical Biology (SMB) meeting through the use of an avatar-based system, novel tools can assist interactions when properly deployed. We are encouraging the NIMBioS community to make use of our facilities to expand and enhance our traditional collaborative short-term visit groups, working groups, seminars, workshops and tutorials over the next several months.

NIMBioS will be providing support for the use of the same platform used at the SMB meeting (sococo), and we expect the flexible nature of "movement" and interaction through the use of this system will allow for development of novel collaborations; provide a means for our colleagues to discuss their research in dynamic, small group settings; allow for informal interactions associated with structured seminars and meetings; and provide a platform for development of novel research and education interaction approaches for those who may not have otherwise been able to meet. We view this as a means to enhance the diversity of our community through expansion of the highly international and amazing breadth of backgrounds of the very interdisciplinary groups in math biology.

We will be announcing an array of opportunities over the next several weeks. These include an expanded Undergraduate Research Conference at the Interface of Mathematics and Biology featuring opportunities for research talks, poster presentations, "lounges" to meet potential mentors and sessions for students to interact with faculty from potential gradate programs. We will also be hosting a series of webinars and associated discussions of the education modules in cultural evolution developed in collaboration with DySoC, and a Tutorial on adaptive management. We ask you to consider ways that this platform will assist your efforts over the months from October through December.

Please use this as an opportunity to apply for existing events or for the use of NIMBioS Interactive for a Short-term "Visit" (lasting a few days to a few weeks for a group of collaborators). We will provide assistance in the use of the platform. Most events will have registration fees of $15/month/participant, but applicants may request support from NIMBioS.

In addition to our more standard Workshop, Tutorial, and Short-term Visit groups, we also intend to have open discussion sessions hosted by various members of our community on "Future Directions in Math Biology."
