Project Title: Optimal spatial targeting of payments for forest-based ecosystem services under climate change and market risks

Gengping Zhu (Ph.D., Zoology, Nankai University, China, 2011) was a postdoctoral fellow working on a project combining ecology and economics to study conservation in space and time in the central and southern Appalachian region. The project sought to integrate present and future predictions of species distributional model/ecological niche model outputs with modern portfolio theory to optimize conservation investment in the Appalachian region. The research was conducted as a part of a Targeted Postdoctoral Fellowship in Species Distribution and Modeling in the labs of Paul Armsworth, Xingli Giam and Mona Papeş. Before joining NIMBioS, Gengping held an associate professor position in Tianjin Normal University in China. Following his fellowship at NIMBioS, Gengping accepted a postdoctoral research position at Washington State University, Pullman. At WSU, he seeks to predict the potential distributions of blueberry maggot, spotted wing drosophila, and brown marmorated stink bug in the Pacific Northwest.
