Bioinformatics

Bioinformatics is a highly interdisciplinary field harnessing computer science, mathematics, statistics, physics and biology to apply the tools of computation and analysis to capture and interpret biological data. The classic data of bioinformatics include DNA sequences of genes or full genomes; amino acid sequences of proteins; and three-dimensional structures of proteins, nucleic acids and protein-nucleic acid complexes. A primary focus of bioinformatics is the ability to take a genome sequence, whether from a human or bacterium, and predict from the sequence the complete set of genes, how they are regulated and what they do. Skilled bioinformaticians are needed in academia and industry to develop new methods for data management and analysis.
