From scanning deserts to forests, scientists across the UT campus are using Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), or drones, in their research. Among its field instrumentation, the Spatial Analysis Lab is equipped with a drone that will take a maximum payload of 5kg for use in research studies. SAL also hosts periodic seminars with speakers from across the UT campus describing their use of drones in research. View the video interviews below to find out how drones are being used in scientific research at UT.
Mapping for Biodiversity (2:59) UT graduate student Mia Wavrek explains how she uses drones to help identify and map key areas for plant biodiversity and migratory bird species conservation.
Science for Earth and Mars (5:58) UT Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences Jeff Moersch explains how he uses drones to bring fresh science to the study of Earth and in learning what to bring to Mars for future research.
Uses in Civil and Environmental Engineering (4:13) Dr. Shuai Li and Dr. Khalid Alshibli of UT's Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering explain how drones are used in their civil and environmental engineering research.
SAL Director Featured. Monica Papeş was profiled on NASA's Earth Data website. In her research, Papeş uses NASA Earth science data to study geographic distributions of plant and animal species. October 2019. Read more. |
