NIMBioS offers fellowships for visits for up to several months by graduate students interested in pursuing research with NIMBioS Affiliate Faculty, postdoctoral fellows or working group participants. Visiting graduate students will work on-site at NIMBioS. The program is designed to facilitate graduate student training while fostering research at the interface of mathematics and biology. Graduate students at the beginning stages of linking theory and data are strongly encouraged to apply. If the proposed visit is less than two weeks, graduate students should instead apply as a NIMBioS Short-Term Visitor.
Applications should outline a student-led research project that is aligned with the goals of a NIMBioS scholar and/or research activity and may include the analysis and synthesis of existing datasets, the development of new models and/or mathematical approaches. Projects seeking to initiate development of databases and/or software that would ultimately be made available to the broader scientific community are also encouraged, as are projects that focus on educational research. NIMBioS will not fund collection of new experimental or field research. Office space and a workstation with access to all NIMBioS computational resources will be provided. Financial support is restricted to reimbursement for travel and housing expenses as well as a per diem to cover other incidental expenses (e.g. meals). NIMBioS does not provide support for student tuition at the home institution. To be eligible the student must have completed one year of their graduate program by the time the NIMBioS Fellowship commences.
Applications are accepted and considered year-round. Notifications will typically be made within two months of application receipt. Applications will be evaluated based upon (i) the scientific value of the project; (ii) qualifications of the applicant as evidenced by prior research results and accomplishments; and (iii) proposed educational benefits to the applicant. NIMBioS is particularly interested in supporting activities by students from groups under-represented in their prospective research areas. Students should provide evidence that sufficient data exist to support the proposed project. Successful applicants are expected to submit a brief report summarizing their activities at NIMBioS within one month of the conclusion of their visit.
Prior to submitting an application, interested students are encouraged to contact NIMBioS Director Louis B. Gross (gross@nimbios.org) or NIMBioS Associate Director for Graduate Education Alison Buchan (abuchan@utk.edu) for feedback on project ideas.
A goal of NIMBioS is to enhance the cadre of researchers capable of interdisciplinary efforts across mathematics and biology. As part of this goal, NIMBioS is committed to promoting diversity in all its activities. Diversity is considered in all its aspects, social and scientific, including gender, ethnicity, scientific field, career stage, geography and type of home institution. Questions regarding diversity issues should be directed to Suzanne Lenhart at diversity@nimbios.org. You can read more about our Diversity Plan on our NIMBioS Policies web page. The NIMBioS building is fully handicapped accessible.
